've been getting an earful lately - everyone wants some snow for Christmas! I don't blame them - who doesn't want to see snowflakes floating to the ground with the outside silence this wintry weather brings? It means longer days for us, mind you, but we like the challenge, anyway! It looks like there won't be any snow around this year for Christmas, though, despite the bitterly cold air that took hold of most of the U.S. for the last couple of days. Southerly winds will keep our temperatures mild and any precip rain - even in the mountains. We've seen a similar pattern for the past month or so where upper level winds are able to push a cold front our way but not strong enough or this far south to sweep the front through. We've had several occasions where the fronts make their way here and then stall. This means lingering clouds and rain chances until the front either washes out or backs up to make way for another system. The front that will move into our area Christmas Day will stall and fall apart near us. South winds take over to keep us warm and then another system moves in and should be able to move through - so look for sunshine and mild temps to start New Year's week. Of course, we could aways look ahead to New Year's Day - the most snow that's ever fallen on that day at GSP was 5.2 inches. This happened back in 1962. So if you can't dream of a white Christmas, maybe we can wish for a snowy New Year's Day. Stay tuned - we'll keep you in the know - even if it's not snow! Merry Christmas and best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!
