Not many are complaining, but the Tropics have been awfully quiet lately. Numerous factors go into this, but the developing El Nino and its shifting of global weather patterns will likely get a lot of the focus.
It’s easy to forget that we’ve already seen a tropical depression this year in the Atlantic; it occurred in May off the North Carolina coast…one of only 28 known systems through the years to have ever developed in May.
It’s also worth remembering that one of the most potent storms to ever hit the U.S. was Hurricane Andrew; a rather late-forming “first named storm”. That storm didn’t form until mid-August of 1992, hitting Florida a bit later in the month. There were only six named storms in 1992, a very slow year, but a very damaging one.
Just proof that we can’t draw any conclusions on this year’s season based on what we’ve seen so far…if it’s mid-October and it’s been awfully quiet, then we’ll have something.
