I've mentioned in this space before (just a few entries ago actually) that when we get a good rain event, the drought situation seems to leave our minds, even though the overall situation may not have improved that much.
Well, on Thursday...within 24 hours after a moderate rainfall event for many in the area...the South Carolina Drought Response Committee met, and the entire state is in some level of drought. The worst of it remains over the Upstate.
Every time we see a good round of rain move through, many of us don't think about droughts or potential water shortages. The next few months are, on average, a wet period for us. This is the time we need to be seeing regular rain...about one inch or more per week...to ensure that are no troubles with water shortages in the hotter, drier summer months. So far this month, we have averaged about an inch every two weeks, and our rainfall deficit has grown again.
With no big rainmakers in the forecast over the next several days, it appears likely we'll finish this month with another deficit...barring some unforeseen weather pattern change. The area really needs a wet spring.
