What is "Spring" Weather?

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

With the start of spring at 7:44 AM on Friday, March 20, many of you will be rejoicing the return to a "warmer" season. Rightfully so...spring marks a continued return to warmer weather that will eventually lead us to summer.

Spring is also one of the most turbulent weather seasons. As the days get longer and warmer, sometimes the colder air won't leave without a fight. This leads to the occasional cold snap that scares farmers and home gardeners alike. That clash of air masses also leads to an increased chance for strong storms, which is why springtime is known as "severe weather season"...even though severe storms can occur at any time of the year. "True" spring weather is that of change; a greater chance for large temperature swings and some unsettled weather, even as our average temperatures continue to climb.

As far as cold snaps go, our average final freeze in the Upstate typically occurs in mid-to-late March, although in 1989 we had a freeze as late as May 8. The average last freeze in the mountains won't arrive until we get past mid-April.

So we're not out of the woods quite yet as far as cold goes, but the odds are rapidly improving as far as keeping those warmer temperatures around...
