When Normal Spring Weather is Considered Weird

"Broken record weather" (vinyl records are making a comeback you know!) has been with us for several days...warm and humid conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Every day has brought rain to someone; some have received rain almost every day. Amounts have varied greatly, with extremely heavy downpours in some places and light rain elsewhere. And I've heard more than a couple of people express disbelief in this weather pattern. "When will the rain chances quit?"

Well, this is the weather we're supposed to have this time of year. It's been four years (as I write this on 5/28...more rain may yet occur) since we've seen some comparable rainfall during the month of May (you have to go back six years in the mountains); the past three years our totals have been one-half to one-third of what we should receive. According to the averages from the GSP National Weather Service office, May is typically our second wettest month of the year, trailing only March.

Although we've been spoiled by nicer days over the past few years, they left behind a drought that has been greatly alleviated by our recent rainfall. So it may be annoying, but the rain had done a bit of good.

We're just being reminded that this is what a Southeastern spring should look like...
