I actually watched The Wizard of Oz in it's entirety over the weekend for the first time in I'm not sure how many decades and what was the deal with The Witch of the North holding out vital information from Dorothy?
Or to pronounce it correctly from the film, Dor-oh-theeee.
The comedian Dennis Miller pointed out many years ago that Glenda, the Good Witch, tells Dorothy at the end of the movie that "you had the power to go home all along."
Miller suggested that Dorothy should have slapped Glenda at that moment because she had the power to tell her that information three hours ago.
There was no need to run from the flying monkeys or trees that throw apples.
I'm thinking of that picture above when the Wicked Witch of the West is right in Dorothy's grill after the house dropped on Munchkin Ville and I'm wondering: this would be a good time to know that she is just three heel clicks away from getting back to Kansas.
Now keep in mind, as my wife and I chuckle about this situation our eight-year old daughter also realizes that Glenda probably should have said something.
So I jump in with "Dorothy had to really learn why she missed home so much. So she went through all those dangers just to go home. She even went to the home of the witch who wanted to kill her, just so she could go back to Kansas."
Crisis averted. I had a harder time explaining to my daughter why Glenda flew around in a bubble, when the broom proved to be such a faster and more maneuverable form of travel.
However, I'm still not sure why Dor-oh-theeeee was going to "miss you most of all Scarecrow." Hey, why the lack of respect for The Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion?
Come to think of it, if it wasn't for The Tin Man and his axe, Dorothy would have been in big trouble. How did they get through the door to that room where the Wicked Witch was holding Dorothy?
The axe.
And how did that huge chandelier fall on the bad guys after they freed Dorothy?
The axe.
Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion spent half the movie saving Scarecrow from fire and stuffing hay back in his pants after an attack.
I guess there is no justice in Oz.
