I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull over the weekend with my wife. Normally you'd think it's hard to convince a woman to see an all-out action festival, but she's a big Harrison Ford fan.
Let's just say no arm-twisting was needed.
The bottom line is probably this: if you liked the first three Indiana Jones movies, you'll like this one.
I can still remember seeing the original way back in 1981. Raiders of the Lost Ark (sorry George Lucas, I can't go with your longer DVD title of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) is one of the five best movies I've ever seen.
I went with some of my co-workers from a radio station who said "hey, we've got free tickets." when I asked what the movie was about, they told me "it's about an archeologist. And it's that guy who played Han Solo."
Needless to say, they had to scrape my jaw off the floor of the theatre after the first 15 minutes. That job was undoubtedly tougher with all the dried up soda and crushed Jujy Fruit.
This new version has many tips of the hat to the earlier films. Ford can still pull off the role, but his voice has changed to more of that Sean Connery gravely delivery.
I do have some advice for Lucas and Spielberg. I love Indy, but they may want to rest the role for awhile. I could see brining Indiana Jones back in a few years with a reboot of the franchise. Pick a new actor and let's find out how Henry Jones, Junior became Indiana Jones. It worked for James Bond in Casino Royale.
Keep in mind we've had six actors play Bond, two for Superman, four for Batman, several Inspector Clouseaus and even the iconic roles of Kirk, Spock and McCoy have been cast with young actors for the next Star Trek.
I still thought the most interesting thing I saw at the theatre was one of the showings of Sex and the City letting out. It was a solid crowd of women.
And one guy.
