Hospitals cutting services, staff amid recession

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A new survey suggests even hospitals are having a rough time withstanding the recession.

In previous recessions, the health care industry has held up well. This time, an industry survey suggests hospitals coping with more needy and uninsured patients have been making tough decisions about cuts to patient services and staffs.

The American Hospital Association counts 22 percent of hospitals in its survey that have reduced their services since September. Those services include outpatient clinics, behavioral health programs and home health care after discharge.

Nine of 10 hospitals said they cut expenses in the first quarter. And just under half have cut staff.

For the first quarter of this year, 43 percent of hospitals said they expected to lose money. That's up from 26 percent in the first three months of last year.

Nearly 1,100 hospitals responded to the March survey.

Pediatricians adopt new term for shaken baby abuse

CHICAGO (AP) - The American Academy of Pediatrics wants a name change for what's become known as "shaken baby syndrome."

Opting for a more scientific description, the nation's largest pediatricians' group is recommending "abusive head trauma."

The academy calls it a more comprehensive diagnosis for brain, skull and spinal injuries associated with shaking and other head injuries inflicted on infants.

The academy says the new diagnostic term should be used in medical records and that it may provide more clarity in the courtroom.

SC traffic officers wrecking car to learn

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Traffic officers from across South Carolina are taking part in a training session in which a car is being wrecked on purpose.

After the car is wrecked on Monday, the officers attending the session in Charleston will train in reconstructing the accident. The idea is to apply what they learn when investigating real accidents.

Officers from seven Lowcountry municipalities are participating, as are officers from the Highway Patrol and the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

Officers from Easley and Greenville are also training at the session.
