So are we all the victims of a big joke by actor Joaquin Phoenix?
The actor claims he's retired from making movies and is starting a career as a rapper.
There's also speculation - according to Entertainment Weekly - that Phoenix is pulling this Andy Kaufman-style stunt to be filmed as a Borat-style documentary by Casey Affleck.
An EW article recently said:
"He said, 'It's a put-on. I'm going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it,'" says one source who recently worked with Phoenix.
Though Phoenix's interest in music is sincere (he earned Oscar and Grammy nominations for his turn as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line and has directed several music videos), with this supposed career reboot he is evidently trying to both lampoon pompous actors and punk the media that covers them.
Or he could be just plain nuts.
When Andy Kaufman would challenge women to wrestling matches during his standup act or Sacha Baron Cohen would trick people into interviewing Borat, you could see an end game.
I'm not sure what I see from Phoenix's Letterman appearance last Wednesday, but if this is a joke on us I don't think anyone is going to feel like a victim.
Besides, this is a great excuse to run the video again!
