The heroic pilot and crew of U.S. Airways 1549 have stayed stunningly silent in this era of instant celebrity. On Monday comes this word to the media: cool it!
There is the usual media crush to get the first interviews with Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger, III, First officer Jeffrey B. Skiles, Flight Attendant Sheila Dail, Flight Attendant Doreen Welsh and Flight Attendant Doreen Welsh who were on board when the plane was forced to ditch into the Hudson River.
We're four days in and they have remained silent. That posture isn't going to change according to this joint statement, released this morning from Business Wire:
Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, First Officer Jeff Skiles and Flight Attendants Sheila Dail, Doreen Welsh and Donna Dent wish to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation for the overwhelming support, praise and well wishes they have received from the public around the world since the events of last Thursday.
The entire crew recognizes the media’s interest in speaking with them as soon as possible, and they are willing to share their experiences when the time is right. However, as the NTSB investigation is ongoing, they ask that the media respect their desire to refrain from participating in interviews until further notice.
It appears Matt Lauer will get the first chance to talk to Sullenberger on NBC's Today Show.
Capt. Rory Kay, safety chief of the Airline Pilots Association, lauded Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III and crew on CBS's Early Show with excellence and professionalism during the Hudson crash.
