I asked this question on Facebook over the weekend and it sure got some responses: what is the worst job you've ever had?
Over the last -- years (exact figure withheld for security reasons) I've been in the same business: TV news. I was a sportscaster and then made the transition to anchoring morning news on Daybreak.
But a quick inventory of my working years from age 14 to 23 is just a bizarre series of jobs. I have been, in order:
Golf caddy (No, it wasn't like Caddyshack)
Bagged groceries (We were supposed to take them to the customer's car, but a pro wrestler named Wilbur Snyder took a case of beer out of my hands, patted me on the head and said "that's OK little guy.")
Worker in a golf pro shop at a country club (Still wasn't like Caddyshack, but where else can you play 18 holes for free before work?)
Sprayed roadside weeds for a contractor for city of Indianapolis (Couldn't work if the winds were higher than 10mph because weedkiller could drift. Got used to watching the weather forecast every morning on TV.)
Apartment complex landscaper and general handyman (I was probably the worst handyman who ever picked up a set of tools.)
Movie theater concession stand (One day I was sent out with cash to buy actual butter for the popcorn instead of the butter tasting oil we normally used.)
Record warehouse (Moved around albums and tapes. Do I need to explain records? Worked with some guys who were committed to listening to Rush all afternoon. That's the band Rush, not Mr. Limbaugh.)
Conveyor belt attaching rubber tubes to plastic caps that are inserted in large bags of milk held inside those huge metal dispensers in cafeterias (That doesn't sound nearly as boring as it really was. I lasted a month.)
Radio station board operator, news editor, news reader, sportscaster, talk show host (I was really able to discuss topics like the economy and abortion at age 21. I did get the public relations staff at the Indiana Pacers upset with me over my opinions on the NBA Draft. Let's just say Upstate radio talk pros Bob McClain and Dan Scott wouldn't have been impressed.)
Loaded trucks for UPS (The woman who worked with us could load trucks faster, better and could have easily beat me up without breaking a sweat.)
Waiter at two restaurants (You have to love the names: The Mother Tucker's Food Experience and Riccos Supper Club. Both are gone now.)
And then a TV job opened up in South Carolina.
The worst job for me.....I have a new appreciation when I see someone get a glass of milk at a cafeteria.
So let me know, what's the worst job you've ever had?
