It's been quite a week at the Thornblade Club in Greer.
First, Lucas Glover wins the U.S. Open. Then on Monday, junior golfer Haley Stephens learned she'd been added to next week's U.S. Women's Open after initially qualifying as an alternate.
I did find it funny that during U.S. Open coverage despite the fact that Glover was at or near the top of the leaderboard most of the way that those announcing the event acted as if he and Ricky Barnes were simply occupying space they'd eventually yield to Mickelson, Duval, or Tiger.
I wonder if Glover's relationship with his granddate Dick Hendley, who nurtured his grandson's career from its beginning, will ever be played up as much as Tiger's with his late father's. It's just as remarkable and while we've given it a bunch of attention around here I wonder if the national media will simply let it pass after it received a mention or two during the final round telecast.
Perhaps Glover needs to win another open or two to be considered "hip" among his fellow pros. While I wish him the best on the course I truly hope success doesn't change someone who's as down to Earth as they come. I don't think it will.
For the most part, pro golfers are generally affable folks. What's likeable about Glover is that he really does come across as someone who doesn't take the whole thing too seriously.
The added pressures that come with being a major champion will test his mettle in that regard.
