Obviously, the Greer Yellow Jackets boys basketball squad has become one hot topic around town as their magical run has them one win away from a state title.
Jeff Neely has had some fine teams over the years but this is probably his most rewarding after it began the season 0-4 and didn’t look to have the scoring rhythm that’s developed as the season has progressed.
Few coaches have the luxury of having two scorers who can get them 25-plus points each night. In Chandler Hash and Chris Dean the Jackets have exactly what a championship team need: guards who can score. Look at any program that goes deep in postseason play and it’s and outside in scenario.
On another basketball front, Clemson seniors played their final home game earlier this week. In the group is forward K.C. Rivers, who has the unique distinction of being Clemson’s winningest player ever as he’s played in all 90 wins during his career entering Tuesday night’s home finale. Rivers career has also run in unison with a team that’s progressively gotten better each year going to the second round of the N.I.T. in his freshman season, to the N.I.T. title game when he was a sophomore, then to the NCAA Tourney last season and should again secure an NCAA trip in a couple of weeks.
And a winning feeling is also around Wofford’s program for the first time since the Terriers made the jump to Division One in the mid-‘90s.
With their win over Furman Monday night to wrap-up the regular season Wofford clinched its first-ever winning campaign in D-1. Over the weekend when they stopped The Citadel’s 11-game winning streak, they secured their first winning Southern Conference record ever.
What’s even better for Mike Young’s squad is that every player who contributed significant minutes this season returns next year.
