As Greer’s boys basketball squad tries to put last Saturday’s state championship loss behind they can at least take solace in knowing that pretty much everyone will be back next season.
One thing they learned from their loss to Camden is that he who is relentless at the basket at this time of the year is the one who usually wins. Camden proved that in rallying from an early 10-point deficit.
Attacking the basket is crucial in March, especially in the NCAA Tourney.
When things get rolling next week, take a look at how many points are scored in the paint by the winning teams, especially once they get beyond the first round. That’s one reason that a team such as Wake Forest, with so many key players at 6’ 9” or bigger, is considered a chic pick for the Final Four.
Of course, getting to “The Dance” is the mystery that will be unlocked Sunday night when the field is announced.
One big question mark for all of the hoops pundits is South Carolina, a team that shared first in the SEC East but at 21-8 has just one win over a team in the RPI top 50 and a strength of schedule close to 100, not to mention an RPI in the high 40s, all key stats for the NCAA’s selection to ponder. Would a win Friday over either Mississippi State or Georgia be enough to push them over the top? I think a loss could very well keep them out.
One other interesting note about this past weekend’s high school title games: When the Christ Church girls took the 1A crown they became the first girls 1A team from the upstate to win a state championship since Ware Shoals in 1975.
The Lady Cavs return just about everyone from this team next year. So, like Greer’s boys, and many others in the area, they’ll expect to make a similar run next season.
