Would you be concerned if a stranger boarded your child's school bus? That’s the case for an Upstate parent who contacted News Channel 7. When one of his daughters told him what happened on the school bus on the way home from Hughes Academy two weeks ago, Jacque Caruthers became quite concerned. Caruthers says, "You hear some many stories about road rage, how serious and how violent that can get and for this bus driver to ignore his responsibility over these children. To allow this perfect stranger to come on board was just very upsetting to me."

Caruthers’s daughter told him another student had thrown a rock from the bus, hitting a car. The driver of that car flagged down the driver and got onto the bus to identify the student who threw it.

Greenville County School District Spokesman Oby Lyles told News Channel 7, via email: “This matter has been investigated. It was determined that a rock was thrown by a student from a bus on Friday into a convertible. The bus was flagged down and the driver opened the bus door and asked the driver of the car to board the bus to identify the seating area on the bus where the rock was thrown. She only entered the stairwell. No one was threatened. The video was watched and the student throwing the rock has been identified. Any disciplinary action regarding the student is a student matter and cannot be released. Any action involving the bus driver is a personnel matter and cannot be released… Normally, we do not allow someone to board the bus."

Caruthers said he too contacted the district with his concerns. Although the district told him they couldn't discuss the specifics, Caruthers says he was told that the driver had been disciplined. Caruthers understands that's a private matter. What he doesn't understand is this: “They said that if it happened again, it would be more severe, which to me, it just can't happen again. You just can't allow a stranger on a school bus when the students are on board," says Caruthers.
