  • The First Snake of the Season

Folks, I'm loving this early spring weather.About three weeks ahead of schedule, I already have a good bit of garden in the ground.Today I gave my garden spot a thorough tilling, then I planted tomatoes, squash, peppers, lettuce, onions and strawberries. When it was time to stop farming and get ready for the television station, I went to my backyard spigot and was about to turn it off... when I made two discoveries.First I saw a rather large toad. Then I noticed something was connected to the toad...A rather large snake!

  • Remembering Native Son Earl Scruggs

America has lost one of its true music masters today. And our area has lost a vastly talented native son.Earl Scruggs, native of Shelby, North Carolina, died today in a Nashville, Tennessee hospital.  He was 88 years old.

  • Historic "Day of the ipad" at Seven on Your Side

It's been a historic day at "Seven On Your Side"... This day technology won another battle against paper. Take a close look at the anchor desk in wide camera shots.  Notice a couple of additional gizmos?

  • Crucial Mission of Our Local Food Ministries

This day provided an experience for me that was both heart-warming and heart-breaking.Heart-warming in that I saw the wonderful ministry of a local charity.Heart-breaking because I saw first-hand the desperate need this charity and others like it fulfill.

  • The Play by Play of the Great Interstate Chase

It was the most compelling local television in quite some time.Tonight "Seven On Your Side" viewers were glued to their sets as we brought them an hour of exclusive live coverage while officers chased a stolen car for 90 miles.

  • The Davy Jones/Monkees Legacy

Rock stars of the 1960s like Davy Jones and his band "The Monkees" made it big without any help from social media.  Their era was pre-email, tweets, Facebook and Youtube.Their popularity came from television, radio, records (the vinyl kind) and teen magazines.

  • Product to Waterproof Cell Phones Would've Come in Handy

Did you catch this story in our news Monday night (1/30)? It was one of the "talker" stories. A California company called "Liquipel" has developed a way to waterproof your cell phone. The company says its nanocoating technique penetrates the entire phone, waterproofing all the vital components. If your phone has a water-related mishap, such as an accidental splash into the toilet, the phone will supposedly still work.

  • BMW and the Carroll Campbell Legacy

Another huge expansion is announced by BMW. Three hundred more jobs, perhaps as many as a thousand, for the Upstate. An additional investment of $900 million. A new model, the BMW X-4, to be built at the Greer plant. The only regret on this day is that the crowd of movers and shakers on hand for the announcement couldn't include former governor (1987-1995) Carroll Campbell of Greenville.

  • Why No Amber Alert in Missing Child Case

Sometimes news stories have a happy ending, and thankfully, that was the case last weekend. A day after he wandered away from his home in Spartanburg County's Cross Anchor community, 21-month-old Jason Burton was found safe. Many of you have raised an important question about the incident. I received this Facebook post from Dede Hensley:

  • Making A "Thankful" List And Checking It Twice

It's the time of year for reflecting on the things for which we are thankful.

  • Local Sheriff's Comments Renew Gun Debate

Sunday's attempted rape at Milliken Park in Spartanburg has reignited local debate on guns and put the Upstate in the national spotlight after comments by Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright.

  • Scott Pelley's Visit to the Upstate

I apologize for not blogging sooner about CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley's visit to Clemson University (Sunday 9/25). Blame it on a very busy week. Finally tonight, there is time to share my experience with you. My daughters Lauren and Kayla joined me, Seven on Your Side morning anchor and consumer reporter Diane Lee, and Seven on Your Side 5 pm producer Kathryn Foessel, in representing WSPA-TV at a luncheon honoring Pelley and his family.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Staffer Shines in Debut as Live Reporter

She's gone from behind-the-scenes manager to being the hottest new talent at "Seven on Your Side." A new talent who's worked here for decades. We are so very proud of our news assignment manager, Mary Lu Saylor. Thursday night 9/29, she had the opportunity to do something totally new in her career as a journalist... Appear on live television.

  • A Daily Reminder of 9-11

How many times this week has someone asked, "What were you doing when 9-11 happened?" Reminders are everywhere that a special, solemn anniversary is being observed this Sunday. A simple lapel pin reminds me of the 9-11 attacks.

  • How Can I Help the Hurricane Victims?

This weekend, the world becomes vastly different for our friends and family in the path of Hurricane Irene. Many families will find themselves without electricity or other utilities, possibly for a lengthy time. Others will discover their homes, churches and places of employment have been heavily damaged, perhaps even washed away. And there will be even greater losses where a loved one has been badly injured or died from the storm's fury.

  • Saying a Prayer for the NC Outer Banks

Tonight my heart goes out to the beautiful Outer Banks of my native North Carolina. I pray the impact of Hurricane Irene this Saturday will be minor. All of us have favorite places we visit or vacation, and for me, that place is the OBX. It's where Gayle and I honeymooned, took several family vacations, visited as often and as long as we could. I've wished so many times it wasn't nine hours away. We would've gone there more often if the trip to and from the OBX didn't each require a full day's travel.

  • Your Comments on the Tuesday Earthquake

Luckily the Carolinas seem to have escaped damage from this afternoon's 5.8 earthquake and the aftershocks that have followed. It was centered in Virginia, but it was felt all the way into Canada. I hope you've had opportunity to read my blog on www.wspa.com about how this news event went completely by me as I worked in my backyard... didn't feel or hear a thing out of the ordinary, just me trying to get landscaping finished. You've sent terrific comments to me on Facebook about your earthquake experience. Have a look, and thanks for sending these in:

  • Earthquake? Not in My Backyard!

A big story happening all around me... And I didn't even know it! Didn't feel it... didn't hear it. I didn't know anything about today's earthquake until I came inside my house after finishing some landscaping chores in my backyard. My wife was on the phone with our teacher daughter. They stopped talking and asked what I knew about the earthquake.

  • Remembering the Elvis Connections

I never saw him perform at a live concert. I own just one of his CDs. But Elvis has made several interesting visits during my decades in broadcasting, and on this 34th anniversary of the death of the King of Rock and Roll, please let me share his connection to my career. Let's begin with August 16th, 1977, the day Elvis died.

  • A Fire Chief's Brave Leadership

For Asheville Fire Chief Scott Burnette, it's hard to imagine a more difficult day than Thursday (7/28). One of his firefighters, Captain Jeffrey Bowen, was killed fighting flames at Biltmore Center, a five-story office building. Ten other firefighters were injured, one of them critically and transferred to the burn center in Augusta, Georgia. Shortly after the terrible loss, Chief Burnette went before live news camera to answer questions about his killed and injured crewmembers and how the fire happened.

  • For Needy Families, Federal Debt Impasse Boils Down to Food

As President Obama wrapped up his speech to the nation tonight regarding the impasse over the federal debt ceiling, I was having an eye-opening conversation with Karen Bradley, executive director of TOTAL Ministries, one of the local agencies that helps the poor with a variety of assistance. Bradley is on the front lines of our community's fight with poverty. She told me about a growing problem that could be made much worse if the federal debt ceiling issue isn't resolved before the crucial August 2nd deadline.

  • Guitar Jam, Louie Louie a Successful Combination

The "Flash Mob Guitar Jam" in Chesnee (July 16th) was one of the most fun music events I've ever experienced. And it was a big success too. Plus, it marked a sorta-kinda milestone in my music career. I'll share that with you in a moment.

  • The Toll of SC's Domestic Violence Grows

The news business gives me a front seat to what's happening in the world, especially the Carolinas. Last night I saw the horrific toll of domestic violence, one of South Carolina's biggest blights.

  • Getting Through This "Cruel Cruel Cruel" Heatwave

For my wife and me, perhaps the most memorable part of our Charleston vacation this June was the hot weather. The four days we were there had highs of at least 100, 102, 102 and 96 respectively. Granted, we expected the Lowcountry to be very warm in June. But this trip, it was so hot, we spent every afternoon in a movie theater or watching television. Even as we did our touristy things in the mornings, we and everyone around us looked wiped out. Now this week we're flirting with 100 degrees in the Upstate and even higher heat indexes.

  • The Experience of Witnessing John Glenn's Shuttle Flight

If your "bucket list" includes watching the launch of a space shuttle in-person, hopefully you were in Florida this morning or modified your list so that watching the shuttle on television sufficed. As I watched shuttle Atlantis take off this morning, I felt emotional... sad that the shuttle program and its glory are coming to an end, and immensely proud of the brave, intelligent Americans who have climbed hurdle after hurdle to see the program through 135 flights. I also felt enormously blessed to have witnessed a shuttle launch.
