The Historic Combination of MLK and Obama

Two historic days in a row that I will never forget...

Yes, two of them.

Let me tell you about them in reverse order.

Today (1/20) was inauguration day for Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America.

He is the nation's first African-American president.

Whether he was your candidate for president... or not... he is now -our- president.

I watched today's ceremonies with great appreciation for Obama's place in history.

And I could see in the faces of the huge crowd huddled in the cold at the National Mall the hope that Obama represents.

Our nation wrestles with tremendous challenges and hurdles, at home and abroad, and I hope this president will be blessed by Almighty God Himself with solutions to them. The problems are too big to evade another four years.

Now, the other historic event.

Monday night (1/19) I was honored to emcee the City of Spartanburg's 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Celebration.

The event featured soul-stirring speeches and music.

It impressed upon me how very much our communities have changed for the better over the past forty years.

Barack Obama's name was mentioned several times in the course of the evening. Almost every time, the crowd let out big cheers and applause.

MLK Day, followed by Barack Obama's inauguration day.

Two historic days in a row... for me... and millions other Americans.
