Life by the Numbers

Numbers can help us understand better the significance of events in our lives.

And this is shaping up as a very big "numbers" year for my family and me.

Yesterday (4/30) was my birthday.

Birthday number 55!

To me, that -sounds- old.

I get a kick out of ages with the same numbers as speed limits. But there's a heckuva difference between 35... 45... and now, 55.

Next I set my sites on the big 6-5. But of course 65 is hardly a speed limit anymore. We all know that if the speed limit sign says 65, we're probably going to drive 75 or faster. Do the speed limit, and the driver behind you has your bumper for lunch.

More significant numbers of 2009:

We began the year by moving my daughter Lauren into a new apartment. I added up the moves, and this made 10 times I have moved her since 2000. I jokingly call myself "One Man and a Truck."

Soon my daughter Kayla will graduate from college. That means two down and none to go when it comes to sending any more checks to Clemson University and apartment complexes.

Her life numbers are just getting started.

The day before Kayla's graduation, my parents will have their 60th wedding anniversary. That's a big-big-big one, folks.

And in October, my wife Gayle and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary!

Plus my band, "Rock and Roll Reunion," has now been performing 15 years, another big milestone.

For me, time seems to go by in a flash these days. Each day is still important and special to me, but they are so busy, so filled with things needing or demanding attention, it's almost like a daily marathon to get as much done as time allows.

Life by the numbers.

As the years go by, the numbers hold more and more significance.

Never lose count of life's important numbers.
