Over the last week, there have been at least three snake sightings in the News Channel 7 parking lot by news department employees.
Jonathan Carlson saw one last week.
So did Christy Henderson.
Friday night, returning from dinner, I spotted one near a door. I went inside to get a pole to shoo the snake away. When I returned two minutes later, it was gone from the spot I had marked with a wire (so I could see the critter in the dark), and I couldn't find it.
Obviously, we have a snake situation...
But nothing tops what happened tonight just after we finished the 6 pm newscast.
As we worked on the 7 pm show, Christy came into the newsroom and said, "There's a snake in the break room!"
Christy is a very calm, collected person and doesn't get rattled easily (remember, she's learning to fly, even after a rough emergency landing this past spring). When she told us about the snake, a coworker wondered if she was kidding.
Nope, we decided Christy wouldn't kid about something like a snake, especially when it was in a second floor room frequented by station employees.
Before I could get to the break room, photojournalist Jason Parker was already putting together a plan to catch the snake.
That's when I got my first look at it.
Sure enough, next to a candy machine was a slithering snake, maybe a foot or so in length... black/gray color... possibly a corn snake.
Jason had a good plan.
He got two tops from printing paper boxes, and in a minute or less, he caught the rascal.
Amy Wood and Christy caught the moment on video.
I opened the door to the back stairs, and out Jason went with his box o' snake.
When Jason got to the ground floor and opened the box, he says the snake slithered into a drain and disappeared.
Meaning the snake is still out there somewhere.
I bet all of us will pay more attention to what's in front of us on the ground until cold weather arrives.
Stay tuned, folks. This adventure isn't over yet...
