Can an app really save your life? We decided to check out the apps that could keep you safe in an emergency. Amy Wood introduces you to a guy who's convinced apps can save lives, in this Seven On Your Side Consumer Watch:
Doug Wood is a guitar enthusiast and teacher, who loves a good ride on the road. But this one time EMT from Chesnee says one motorcycle ride almost cost him his life.
Doug said, "I was going to take about a three day ride up to West Virginia, about two miles from where we were supposed to meet I got stung in the eye."
Doug is deathly allergic to bees.
"I knew I was going further than I'd ever been in a reaction," Doug said. "By the time the ambulance got there with paramedics I was in anaphalactic shock."
The problem for Doug was communciation and he'll never forget what the EMT's asked him for in the back of the ambulance.
"When I was in the back of the ambulance the paramedic asked me right then, did I have an iPod or an iPhone."
Doug didn't forget and when he got an iPod for Christmas he went surfing for an app.
He bought the ICE app, which stands for In Case of Emergency, and demonstrated to us, how it takes pictures of his license, stores his emergency contact info, includes his medications, and more.
"This is something paramedics and the doctors will need when they're treating you."
