The mother of singing star Kanye West, Donda West, died over the weekend from what the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office calls complications from surgery.
Just today a plastic surgeon claims to have performed a tummy tuck and breast reduction on the 58-year-old before she died. The doctor maintains that he did nothing wrong and claims she may have died from a heart attack or a pulmonary embolism.
We checked with local plastic surgeon Dr. Madgy Habib with Spartanburg Plastic Surgery, who says a pulmonary embolism, otherwise known as an artery clogged by a blood clot, is one of the complications to watch for when performing tummy tucks.
Dr. Habib says, "One of the important complications in abdominalplasty is clotting in the leg vessels that travels to the lungs and causes pulmonary embolism which could cause sudden death."
Dr. Habib has been performing plastic surgery operations for thirty-one years and he says now more than ever people are becoming flippant about the risks.
"People think about plastic surgery as drive through surgery that's not true. Some of the media have made it sound very simple but it is surgery."
He says he's never had any major problems with a patient, but the procedures are very serious and before any surgery he makes sure they know a complication could result in death.
Dr. Habib says at his office patients must undergo a complete exam and discuss their medical history before having surgery to make sure there are no complications. He says even things you may not think would affect your surgery can. For instance, ginkgo biloba can act as a blood thinner as well as some over the counter medications. Dr. Habib says if you are going to have plastic surgery talk to your doctor about the risks and research the procedure you want done so you will be informed.
