While the simple act of turning off the lights to save energy may not seem like much, you can actually make a difference in the environment by switching out your light bulbs.

A simple and easy way for you to Go Green and Save Green is to replace the bulbs in your house with compact fluorescent models.

These new bulbs last up to 10 years, which means less money to spend replacing burned out bulbs. Also, the new model of our buddy the light bulb uses 75 percent less energy and lights your house just the same.

You might have heard these newer bulbs cost more. They do, but the difference in cost is small, with several websites and even stores like Wal-Mart selling inexpensive models of the fluorescents. Plus, you make up any price increase with the savings you get on your energy bill.

Speaking of that bill, 20% of our energy costs come from lighting up our homes. If everyone in America replaced just one old bulb with the new one, we would save enough energy to light three million homes.

You’ll also want to look closely on the box for the right wattage. Make sure you are getting the equivalent bulb for the wattage you need.

If you have older incandescent bulbs that have been replaced, make sure to recycle them or you can donate them to a school or charity. Also, clean up from a broken fluorescent bulb can be dangerous because they contain a small amount of mercury. Click here to find out about the safe and proper way to clean up the pieces.
