It's a kitchen appliance you may take for granted…the dishwasher. News Channel 7 is on your side and wants to help save you money with Go Green/ Save Green.
You probably don’t think about the dishwasher being an energy guzzler, but a lot of Americans are getting cleaned out in the wallet over dirty dishes. Almost all dishwashers use electricity to power the wash cycles. An average dishwasher uses about 1000 kilowatt hours a year.
That’s just as much as you clothes dryer.
It uses the same amount of energy whether completely full or just halfway there.
So, make sure to run the dishwasher only when you have enough for a full load.
Another simple way to get the dishes done is to hand wash them in the sink, just make sure you don’t let the water run too much while you're doing it.
If everyone hand washed their dishes just once a year, we would save billions of gallons of water and energy.
Also, make sure to use the energy saver switch if you have one, or wash them with the shortest cycle. If you air dry your dishes instead of using the heater, you'll reduce your energy use by 40%. If you don't have that option, just open the door before the drying cycle starts.
Most new dishwashers come with the energy star label, so if you have the opportunity, upgrade to a newer model. You could save 2800 gallons of water by doing it.
