Americans have a love affair with their cars and many of us drive to work alone. But a simple way to help the planet and save some cash is jumping in the car with a friend or co-worker. Living in the Upstate or Western North Carolina, many of us commute 30 to 60 miles one way to get to our jobs. If you haven't tried it yet, an easy way to Go Green and Save Green is to take one and add three.
Carpooling with even just one other person instead of flying solo saves over 8,000 pounds of CO2 every year. Also, by splitting up the cost for gas, you can save money in your pocket book which gives you more money for coffee.
The freeways are a crucial link between Greenville and Spartanburg. Over the next five years, the government plans on spending over 100 billion dollars on highways with only 4 billion on public transportation. Since there is not currently a commuter train between the cities, carpooling on the freeway is the best way to go.
For those of you who can use a bus in certain cities, you are already doing your part to Go Green. One full city bus means 40 fewer cars on the road. Also, certain buses run on clean energy and that means even less pollution for our area. The Greenlink in downtown Greenville runs on biodiesel which helps save the earth. Another note about carpooling is that some businesses are offering incentives for riding with your co workers. If your company doesn't offer one, ask them to start one up.
