Where's The Beef?; Go Green With Less Red Meat

»  Comments | Post a Comment

There is no mistaking it, America is obsessed with eating beef and the obesity problem in the U.S. is not getting better. But just by cutting down on our beef consumption, we can save the planet and save some money.

Americans love our double cheeseburgers, big macs and other beefy foods. But methane from cows is actually a problem contributing to global warming. We have a couple of ways to ditch the burgers and Go Green/Save Green.

On average, Americans eat 260 pounds of beef a year which works out to 5 pounds of beef a week! It’s no wonder that one in five Americans are obese. The methane gas produced by cows is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide that we typically hear about.

Now, you don't have to go completely vegetarian and eat soy and tofu all day. If you reduce the amount of burgers you eat each week by 10 percent, it would save enough grain for 60 million people to eat. Did you know that for every one pound of beef produced, it takes seven pounds of grain and 2500 gallons of water to grow that grain?

Not only are they better for your health, but it takes less energy to grow fruits and vegetables. It takes 95 percent fewer raw materials to grow and harvest natural products such as bananas and apples. If just 100,000 people reduced their beef intake by 25 percent, we would save 1800 tons of CO2 from being emitted. Another bit of Go Green info: for every quarter pounder with cheese you eat, 55 square feet of rain forest had to be cleared to make your burger.
