You may not think that just by cooking a turkey dinner in your oven you are using a lot of energy and you could be wasting money. Many of us like to experiment in the kitchen, cooking gourmet meals like the next Bobby Flay. With gas prices getting so high, now more than ever, people are staying home to cook. There are a few easy things to do so you can Go Green and Save Green in the kitchen.
The average American cooks in the oven 185 times a year. These ovens have to heat up 35 pounds of steel before they even get to cooking your food, which only absorbs about 6 percent of the heat given off. When you continue to check to see if your food is done, you are wasting energy. Every time you open the oven door to check on your food, 25 percent of the heat escapes. Instead, you can use the oven light and a meat thermometer which is visible through the window.
Keeping the air moving is also helpful to save energy and heat your food faster. If you have a convection oven or convection setting, turn it on. Also, leave an inch or so between pans and stagger them on the racks to let more hot air into the food. It's also important to keep your ovens clean because they will heat faster and cook your meals better.
