Recently on Go Green/Save Green, we told you about ways to save energy and money in the kitchen using your oven. Now, we have some other kitchen tips to help save the earth and your wallet.
While the big work horse oven is great for family meals around the holidays, a microwave is much more energy conscious for your everyday meals. In fact, it's 75 percent more energy efficient than a conventional oven. If you use microwave to do your browning, defrosting and cooking veggies, you can cut your cooking costs by 20 percent.
A simple thing like cutting up your food before you cook it will make the process faster, which will also save you energy. Also, a mini grill or toaster oven uses two thirds less energy than a regular oven. Using the right sized pan on the burner can also save you money on your power bill. If you cook with the wrong sized pan, it will waste about 40 percent of the burner's energy.
If everyone in the Upstate and Western North Carolina used the right sized pan just once, it would prevent hundreds of thousands of CO2 from being released into the air.
One last thing to do is thaw your food in the fridge instead of under hot water or in the microwave. You get a double benefit from that, saving water and electricity and your fridge won't have to work as hard to cool everything since you put a big hunk of frozen meat in there.
