Recent rains have helped allergy sufferers by washing away pollen from the burst of spring we've been seeing lately. However, Greenville allergist Dr. Neil Kao says if you have spring allergies, you won't be able sing with relief just yet.
He says, "It can occur very quickly within a day the pollen counts will jump right up in the peak of the season."
He says the rain is a wild card because, while it gets rid of the pollen, the trees become stronger and are able to produce more when the weather becomes nice again.
He says, "If the temperature is good the trees will drink up the water and start metabolizing and producing lots of pollen."
Dr. Kao counts pollen spores in our area for the National Allergy Bureau. He says this week is one of the worst in our area for spring allergies, peaking April 9th and staying high the weeks following right on into grass allergy season.
Dr. Kao says, "After a while the immune system is getting weaker and weaker to the whole thing daily..just pollen pollen pollen from trees then comes the grass season here.
Grass pollen becomes the worst in the Upstate just six weeks later on May 19th.
According to Dr. Kao, the best thing you can do is get some over the counter medicine or see a doctor if you are unable to get relief.
He says hopefully mother nature keeps up these bursts of rain and cooler temperatures, so maybe every few days you'll have a little relief and can enjoy the beauty of spring without the pain of allergies.
Dr. Kao says there are some home remedies you can try to help ease the pain of allergies. He says you can take a cold shower, that makes your blood vessels constrict and its easier to breathe.
Also, if you aren't severely clogged, try a little horseradish. It can open your airways.
Finally, eat you omega 3 fatty acids. Its been shown to fight inflammation.
