Most of us have them, use them and then don't know what to do with them when we get a new one. We're talking about cell phones and this week in our go green save green segment, we have an easy way for you to help save the earth, one cell phone at a time.
If you have an old cell phone that you don't know what to do with when you upgrade, we've got a local company that's helping to go green and save green simply by throwing your cell phones in the bucket.
“Very easy to recycle them. Very easy to keep them out of the landfill. Very easy to clear the clutter out of your house,” explains Karen Schulz of Verizon Wireless.
Easy, clean and green. That's what Verizon is hoping for with its cell phone recycling program.
“The EPA estimates that only 10 percent of cell phones used are recycled and that adds a lot to our landfills.”
Karen Schulz with Verizon says that 150 million cell phones are taken out of service each year as people upgrade to the latest greatest technology.
“If we could recycle just 66 percent of those phones, we could power houses about 194,000 houses a year on the energy we save.”
Even if you're not a customer of Verizon Wireless and you have a phone from a different carrier, you can still come into any store and drop it in the bucket so you can go green and save green.
“We really do want to be responsible to our environment and reusing those phones for the good purpose of helping victims of domestic violence.”
Verizon's Hope Line recycling program took in over a million phones last year alone and continues to help victims of domestic violence with these refurbished phones.
Power cords, batteries and obviously your old cell phones…all helping to go green and save green.
