As a bride, looking at all the gorgeous wedding gowns you start to think about the day you'll wear that dress. You think about all the special people that will be there to see you in it and those that won't. Like my Aunt Rita, one of the strongest women I have ever known. She died February 4th at the age of 62 from Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Now for brides like me, there's a way to honor our loved ones and help others in their final days through the gown we choose.
Barbara Raskin with Brides Against Breast Cancer says, "It's a blessing for the people who are buying the gowns its a blessing for us to be able to do and its a blessing for the people whose wishes are granted."
Brides Against Breast Cancer has thousands of gowns that are donated from manufacturers and high end designers.
They are sold at a fraction of the original price.
Raskin says, "Take a look at this normally $3,395. They are selling it here for $1099."
Others go for just hundreds.
She says, "We've got absolutely everything every end of the price scale
All the proceeds from this event go toward making a final memory for a woman dying of breast cancer in the Upstate.
Last year the sale made enough money so that 6 women got special memories.
They can be anything from making a memorial garden to what my Aunt Rita wanted in her last days which was more time with each of her family members.
Barbara says, "We like to think that this is a terrific circle of compassion and caring where a young woman at a time in her life that is very happy can make an important purchase and pass on the love to someone else who is at much more unfortunate time in their life."
So as you brides out there look for the perfect dress, consider finding one that will not only be a great lifelong memory for you but one that may just be the memory of a lifetime for someone else.
The Brides Against Breast Cancer event is going on Friday until 8-pm at Summit Pointe located at 805 Spartan Drive in Spartanburg. It will also be open Saturday from 10 to 4. The first twenty-five people each day will receive a special gift. There will also be several vendors there that can help you with other aspects of your wedding. If you can't make the event but are still interested in helping make a special memory for a woman in the last stages of life with breast cancer, you can schedule an appointment with Brides Against Breast Cancer at their Santee office to look at the gowns.
