Don't Flush Your Money; Green in The Bathroom

»  Comments | Post a Comment

This week for Go Green/Save Green we’re going to the bathroom.

We’ve talked about water conservation before, but there are a few easy things you can do with the shower and the toilet.

Did you know that we use 50 gallons of water a day between the sink and the shower?
While we all may love hot, relaxing showers, they actually account for 37% of all hot water usage in your house.

One way to save energy and money is to install a low-flow showerhead. They can save you 15 gallons of water per shower. That amounts to an 83 percent reduction in your hot water usage.

Now, it’s on to the toilet. Instead of flushing your money away, try a couple of these tips to reduce your waste and save some green.

Most toilets nowadays are 1.6 gallon per flush toilets, using less water to do the same job.
If you have an older 3-5 gallon per flush toilet, try dropping in an old milk jug with some stones to weigh it down. It will displace the water which will waste less water per flush.
You can also get an early closure flapper from a hardware store. Just by doing that, it can save you 30-50 percent of water per flush.
