Pharmacist Ann Barnes was born and raised in Williamston, so she says when she sees her customers struggling to pay for medicine it hurts.
According to Barnes, "It makes me feel very helpless because I feel like I am not able to take care of people that need to be taken care of."
With the economy suffering, she says its happening more and more.
"I have seen it from antibiotics to cholesterol medications, asthma and they unfortunately have to pick and choose."
Now AnMed health is trying to help those in need by offering 230 generic drugs for just five dollars.
Barnes says, "We serve a lot of patients that are medicare or medicaid and of course there are a lot of cutbacks there so that is one of the driving forces behind this."
The list even includes many cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid and antibiotics not offered at other discount places like Wal-mart and Target. One of the biggest is Azithromycin or the Z-pac prescribed for things like strep throat and bronchitis.
Barnes says, "We were charging somewhere around 25 to 30 dollars beforehand and now we have moved it five dollars."
Barnes says the generics may not cover every prescription a person needs but at least it will help them get as many as possible.
"We are very excited about this because we do feel like we have another option now."
So she can continue working knowing her neighbors in Anderson County are getting the medicine they so desperately need.
