One hundred and seventy-four thousand pounds lost and this year the Activate Upstate folks are hoping for thousands more.

The annual weight loss challenge kicks off in one week.

This year organizers are encouraging more businesses to join the fight against obesity and get involved.

They say if people are healthy, they'll be better at their jobs and make the Greenville area more competitive.

One local CEO, Stewart Spinx, is challenging his workers.

He says he lost 40 pounds and feels better, but he adds there is also a financial incentive.

He says, "It is extremely costly our insurance has continued to climb and it is just the right thing to do to encourage people to get on the other side and take responsibility for their own health."

Last year around 90 businesses participated in the Greenville area.

Activate Upstate was called the Shrinkdown. It kicks off at the Carolina First Center on January 15th. The weight loss challenge will be going on in other Upstate cities like Spartanburg, Greenville and Anderson. Contact the YMCA in your area for more information.
