Doing your laundry is one of those chores we all love to hate. The days of using scolding hot water to get those stains out is over. We have a few easy tips to make washing your clothes more efficient.
When you throw a load of laundry into the washing machine, 80 percent of the electricity during a wash is used to heat the water. The average American does 400 loads of laundry a year. If it’s not done right, that’s your money being washed away. With newer and more effective detergents now on the market, you can actually use cold water to get your clothes clean. That alone will cut your energy costs in half.
Now, the second cycle in the laundry routine…the dryer. We spend about 90 dollars a year in electricity just to dry our clothes. If we hang them out to dry instead, we would save hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2.
If you still want to use your dryer, make sure the moisture sensor is on. That can reduce your costs by 15 percent. Also, make sure the lint screen is cleaned every time. That improves the flow of air and makes your dryer work more efficiently.
