Buechler says, "It's a huge problem its estimated to be a third of the U.S. population"
Prescriptions for sleep related problems are up as well as over the counter drug use. according to Medco Health's latest numbers, Americans 20 to 44 increased their use of sleep aids by 128 percent from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Buechler says sleep aids prescription or over the counter are only mean't to be taken for a limited time. Some just a few days and other prescription medicine can be taken up to six months. He says, "The dangerous side effects especially in older folks is cardiac problems." He also says if you have something like Sleep Apnea and don't know it taking sleep aids can be dangerous. According to Dr. Buechler," They can heart problems they can have blood pressure issues. their breathing rate can slow down." Not to mention the hangover effect some over the counter medications can have leaving you drowsy and unable to drive. Then some of the medicines simply stop working so people take more. He says, "You take the medicine and you get so used to taking it you have to take more to have the same side effect." Dr. Buechler says sleep aids can be safe but you especially need to be careful if you are taking herbal remedies not regulated by the FDA.
