Donna Sadler used to sell insurance, so when her father got cancer she was confident he was covered. She quickly found out Medicare would only cover part of her dad's expensive prescriptions because he had already met the $2,700 limit for Medicare Part D. He now faced paying 100% out of pocket until his cost reached more than $4,000. According to Donna, "There was a medication that he needed that was $1252.00 He was in his donut hole and we were going to have to pay full price for it. Well folks who are on social security income. I mean that would take just about their whole check." Donna decided to do some research and found drug companies are actually willing to help. She says, "The cost of his medication was $1252.00 at a local pharmacy and now he gets it through the pharmaceutical company for $25." She claims there are more than 950 different drug companies out there with Patient Assistance Programs. She says, "It is ridiculous what folks are having to pay and what's more ridiculous is that there is help out there and they just don't realize it." But she admits the process can be complicated. "Once you know the medication you have to research the pharmaceutical company, you have to print off the application, you have to gather information and then you have to get signatures." She says she hasn't found one drug yet that hasn't been available for considerably less. According to Donna, "The folks that I am in the process of helping right now have 18 medications that they are spending over 13 hundred dollars on. Every single month." Donna says she believes helping seniors like her father is her calling, so she can make sure they can live comfortably and take advantage of the help that is available to them. Donna is working with the United Way to start a non-profit so she can help seniors full-time. She says even if you own a home or have insurance other than Medicare you may qualify. According to the Kaiser Family Fund there are 3.4 million people in the United States that need prescription drug help and do not take advantage of it. She says she will help you for free. However there is a $25 application fee the companies charge.

Donna also says there are government programs people can use to help pay for prescription drugs and that will add money to your social security check. For more information on those click on these links SLMB Help and LIS Help.
