Cheese Sold In Our Area Possibly Contaminated

The Food and Drug Administration is recalling cheese from Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese, sold under the names Aguas Calientes and El Jaliciense because of possible listeria contamination. It can come on as flu like symptoms, but according to emergency room doctor Brent Rody with Spartanburg Regional, listeria contamination can be deadly in some patients particularly babies and the elderly.

He describes the symptoms as, "nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea body aches joint pain fever."

Dr. Rody says getting listeria is rare, but news of a possible contamination in cheese sold in our area has him on alert.

He says, "I mean we will definitely be on the look out for it here."

The Food and Drug Administration is recalling cheese from Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese, sold under the names Aguas Calientes and El Jaliciense.

The recalled Asadero and Oaxaca cheese products were sold to stores and deli's in 10 pound balls, 16-12 oz plastic packages and in 6lb blocks.

Dr. Rody says if you eat contaminated food the symptoms will set in within 24 hours.

Dr. Rody says, "If you are a healthy person without any immuno-suppression typically this will run its course in two days and be gone.

He says listeria contamination is treatable with antibiotics.
He says we should all be aware of the signs and symptoms. If you ate the cheese call your doctor immediately.
Listeria makes up about one percent of food borne illnesses.
The expiration dates on the packages will be between october 28th..2008 and may 10th 2009.
