South Carolinians are suffering with one in ten people in the state out of a job.
Just last month South Carolina's unemployment rate hit a whopping eleven percent, that means for many people covering their healthcare costs are now impossible.
The Employment Security Commission says the average person receiving unemployment benefits in the state gets $992 a month.
However, Familes USA says if a person loses their job and wants to extend their family's healthcare coverage through COBRA the average cost is $1,069.
That's almost one hundred dollars more than they receive each month for all their expenses.
President Obama is hoping to help those people by passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Under the plan, the former worker will only pay 35 percent of the insurance premium. The government will pay for the remaining 65 percent.
If eligible, a person can get the help up to 9 months and it is retroactive to people who lost their job on or after September 1st, 2008.
These changes are currently in effect and estimates show they could benefit up to 7 million Americans.
To find out if you are eligible contact your former employer.
