South Carolina Scaling Back H1N1 Flu Surveillance

South Carolina Scaling Back H1N1 Flu Surveillance

South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control is scaling back its monitoring of the H1N1 flu because it doesn't seem to be spreading quickly.

South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control is dialing back its response to the new H1N1 flu virus because the state is not having many new cases. There have been 34 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu in the state, most related to a trip to Mexico by students from Newberry Academy.

DHEC was asking for daily updates from the counties on the number of possible cases they were seeing, but is now asking for new reports just once a week. The agency will also update its website, here, once a week now instead of daily.

DHEC spokesman Thom Berry says the agency is giving its employees some much-needed time off after long hours dealing with the flu outbreak. But he says DHEC would be able to ramp up its response again quickly if it were to become necessary.
