Upstate Business Turns Green; Zero Landfill Waste

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A national company based in the Upstate has achieved a lofty goal...sending less than one percent of their waste to a landfill. That effort has brought awards from the community and praise from their employees.

Milliken is one of Spartanburg County's largest employers, so it's important for them to do their part to Go Green and Save Green. We're going to take you inside and show you how they take recycling to another level.

It's another quiet day at the duck pond at Milliken. “Recycling projects are really everyone's job in the company so everyone is looking out for those opportunities,” explains Cassidy Carlile. He is the director of environmental services for Milliken.

Most people know the Milliken building as the place to hang by the lake and feed the ducks. But the employees inside are feeling kind of green.

“Everything we do we first try to eliminate waste, that's the best objective, especially for a manufacturing environment...we try to eliminate the waste we create or generate.”

Carlile says Roger Milliken started being environmentally conscious many years ago. “He did start a very long time ago before it was the vogue thing to go green or do things that were right for the environment. He established that very early on.”

The company recycles 100% of its paper and uses re-circulating cooling ponds for the air conditioner. “Total company water reduction has been about 50 percent over the last 18 years through hundreds of thousands of different projects,” says Carlile.

Milliken has been recognized for its green like achievements, winning several awards and making employees happy to do their part.

“They're proud to work for a company that's concerned about the environment and do the right thing in recycling and reducing our carbon footprint in those areas.”

"With respect to our earth"...a motto we can all live by. Milliken is also working with the Wellford landfill to recycle methane and use it to power its plant in Inman. If you have a Go Green idea, email it to us and we will get it on the air.
