Go Green With HVAC

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Today, the Go Green Save Green team is showing you a family that is in desperate need of an energy makeover for their home. And thanks to the "Help My House" contest, they got it.

Too hot? Too cold? Or just right? We're not talking about porridge. We're talking about the temperature inside of your house.

“We’ve always had a problem where this is the coldest room and in summertime it stayed cooler, but other parts of the house were struggling to remain consistent throughout the house.”

Eric Drummond and his family are looking for ways to save money, while also being environmentally conscious.

“The goal of this project is to get the energy bill of this house to half of what it is now,” explains David Hammond with the Laurens Electric Co Operative.

That goal will start with a more energy efficient HVAC unit.

“The HVAC unit is probably 15 to 20 years old. We feel it is the strongest culprit in this house for their energy consumption problem,” says Hammond.

David is part of the team turning the Drummond house into a “green” house.

“The duct work down there is old and leaky. They say the duct work is naturally the veins of your home for the air and if there are any leaks, that is wasted air.”

Hammond says when you get a new heating and cooling unit, it's important the duct work is replaced at the same time.

“60 percent of homes in America are operating at less than 60 percent efficient. They are losing 40 percent of their energy costs through waste like leaky duct work and inefficient systems absolutely.”

Mike Davis with Davis Services says cooling costs could be 20 to 30 percent of your total bill...and if you can't afford a whole new system....

“We can save 30 to 50 percent per month in heating and cooling costs just by doing a simple tune up.”
