Going Green In Greenville

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Recycling is something that is everyone's responsibility, yet some people still don't do it. Some cities in the Upstate have dropped their curbside program, which makes it convenient for residents to do their part to go green. The city of Greenville is one of many with a growing trend toward recycling.

Over 600 tons of glass and bottles recycled every year for the city of Greenville. We are in the solid waste yard talking about how you can go green at home.

“Make it a habit every day.”

It's a simple plea from Alysen Woodruff.

“It’s not a big deal to do if you just start your family off doing it. It’s going to be no different from throwing it in the garbage bin. Its just one container over the other and the impact that you make is so positive,” explains Woodruff.

Alysen is the recycling coordinator for the city of Greenville. Her goal is to educate everyone on how easy it is to recycle.

“I wish people would recycle on the go. Put it in your bag, put it back in the car...its not going to kill you to hold on to it for a few more minutes.”

The city of Greenville has done curbside recycling since 1994, but with budget cuts and the economy, some lawmakers haven't made going green a top priority.

“Our budgets overall have decreased to some degree so you have to become more thrifty and try to determine what’s more important this year.”
“I don't think environmental concerns are on the top of the list when they are making the budget and so that's one of the first things to be cut,” explains Woodruff.

An event planned for this weekend will give you an opportunity to clear out your old electronics from your house and go green at the same time.

“If it plugs in in some fashion we will take it. We’ve gotten hair dryers, 8 track players reel to reels.”

The biggest message from Woodruff...

“Recycling is available in your area. Whether you have curbside or a drop off, you don't have to pay for the drop off center...there's not an excuse to not do it.”
