Fruits and veggies grown locally are giving one Upstate community something to cheer about. It's also bringing families together as they learn how to go green in the garden.
You might not know it by walking through the neighborhood, but behind this fence is a community garden where you can go green and save green with organic produce.
“It really tends to shape and change the way you live and eat and how you are as a member of the community.”
Jodi Hajosy is taking a greener approach to feeding her family.
“It’s so good to get the kids involved with where food comes from and know it doesn't just come from the grocery store,” explains Hajosy.
She noticed a community garden sign on her daily run through her neighborhood in Greenville and wanted to get involved.
“As you can see we have egg shells in there. And that’s one of the organic gardening techniques for slugs.”
“Local food is a big issue because it’s so much more sustainable. It’s not been picked early. It's not been trucked across the country.”
So Jodi joined GOFO...the Greenville Organic Foods Organization.
“They started promoting healthy food in the community and through the schools and starting the community gardens.”
Each week, she and other members work in the community garden, harvesting different organic produce for their families.
“Today I’ll harvest butter beans, green beans and a couple of carrots.”
“We're growing regular potatoes this summer and then plant sweet potatoes again in the fall.”
She says working with GOFO is also a great for the kids.
“You also get the exercise with working in the garden and appreciation for it. I have three kids and they love planting seeds and watching them grow.”
GOFO has limited spots open each year for members of the community to join. If you would like more info, email us at gogreen@wspa.com.
