You could be eligible to make your home more energy efficient for free. A program in South Carolina could give some homeowners over $6000 in energy upgrades for nothing more than a phone call.
We're here in Greenville County to show you how one woman has used the stimulus package to go green and save green, right here at home.
“This is mostly where I was getting a lot of cold air and losing a lot of heat.”
Joy Bowie has lived in this drafty house for more than 25 years.
“I would have to use a quartz heater on my feet and legs to watch television, with a snuggle,” explains Bowie.
The former 9-1-1 shift supervisor wanted to reduce her energy use and make her house more comfortable.
“We started actually weatherizing houses in October,” explains Bruce Forbes.
Enter SHARE...a community action agency in Greenville that helps lower income residents and senior citizens weatherize their homes.
“They go around the house and begin the process of looking for air leaks and things along those lines,” says Forbes.
He is the special projects manager for SHARE. Forbes says the weatherization process is a win-win for families and for the environment.
“We will air seal the house for you...we will add insulation, both in the ceiling and the side walls and floor, we will tighten up the duct work.”
Over the last 30 years, more than 6 million people have taken advantage of the energy saving program...and now thanks to the stimulus package, even more people can cash in.
“The service is free to the homeowner or the renter.”
It is available:
Families making twice the poverty rate.
1800 dollars for one person.
Adding 700 for each individual in the house hold.
About 40,000 a year for a family of four.
Also, check it out if you are 60 years and over, a family with children under six, or disabled.
That’s something that makes Joy Bowie thankful she can stay warm.
“There's no more air running through the house, real cold air...everything is so much warmer...it's wonderful,” says Bowie.
From insulation inside the walls down to the crawl space, it’s weatherization to go green and save green.
Last year alone, South Carolina received 59 million dollars from the stimulus package for weatherization. To find out if you are eligible in Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties, you can call this number....864-527-8990.
