A lot of us want to keep our yards green and our grass alive during the hot summer months. But your yard doesn't have to suffer just because Mother Nature isn't taking care of the watering.
In these abnormally dry conditions throughout the Upstate and Western North Carolina, it's important to keep your lawns watered. But you also want to save money and energy at the same time. We have a few tips to go green and save green and keep your lawns green as well.
Outdoor water use accounts for 50 percent of your total water bill in the summer months. However, it's important not to over water plants or grass as that can damage them, which makes them susceptible to disease. Also, you want to water in the morning time or the evening during the cooler hours of the day. That will prevent water loss from evaporation.
An easy way to save water and save energy is to make sure the sprinkler is in the middle of the lawn and it's not watering the sidewalks or the driveways. That's a huge area for water waste. Also, you can install a drip irrigation system. It uses 50 percent less water than conventional sprinkler systems.
It's time to get your hands dirty...with mulch. It's an easy way you can prevent water loss from evaporation. You can simply use leaves or brush and manure. Plus, you can put down some newspaper...lay it down and put the leaves on top of it and that can help with water retention even more.
When you're spraying down your plants or trees around the house, make sure to spray them at the root of the plant not just on the leaves. If you only spray the leaves, there is a lot of water loss through evaporation.
If you have a sprinkler system for your yard, set up an automatic watering program to limit the amount of water waste...but, make sure to turn it off whenever we "do" get some rain.
