Used Hair Helps Oil Spill

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It’s a new way to help clean up the Gulf oil spill…using used hair. After recent reports that people needed to stop sending hair to the Gulf, another Upstate salon is answering the renewed call for help.

At Wilson's On Washington in Greenville, large bags of hair are not only helping out the gulf oil spill, but going green at the same time.

“At least something that's natural is going toward the environment.”

Hair...and lots of it.

“It's a no brainer. We have all of this surplus of natural material and why not let it go to something good.”

Amy Bralley is the salon coordinator at Wilson's...one of many salons around the country sending their used hair to help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf.

“When everyone finishes cutting, they sweep it into the vacuum system, it goes into a big drum, then we collect the hair from that and we box it up and send it to a warehouse that's available,” explains Bralley.

“A friend of mine had sent me a link on Facebook and I thought it was a great idea.

Merri Johnson is a stylist at Wilson's who brought the idea to work.

“My husband works for a green company so I think about that all the time. It was an easy fix I mean an easy way to help,” she says.

Matter of Trust.org has been collecting hair clippings from people and animals to make "hair booms" for the last few months.

“It's a non profit group and volunteers make the hair booms and they set them out to help soak up the spill,” says Bralley.

And customers in for their monthly trims are happy to help out.

“Well they feel like they are helping in a small way...getting a haircut and sending it on so it worked out wonderful,” explains Johnson.

Wilson's On Washington also goes green by using recycled rubber for the mats stylists stand on. Plus, there are several hair products used that are environmentally friendly.
