Everything old can be new again. That's the theme of one couple's efforts to re use a form of transportation without the wheels.
This week we're talking to a couple in Rutherfordton, North Carolina about using an old rail car as a bridge. It's their way to go green and save green.
“We knew we wanted a bridge. We wanted something to go across the creek.”
George and Janice Streeter are transplants from Michigan and they like being green.
“We recycle totally down here which we never did in Michigan,” says Janice.
“The appliances, the heat pump the insulation windows, I mean everything was put in according to the latest standards.”
Their house, built in 2004, has all of the latest in green technology...including a garage for George's red hot rods.
“I’d rather repair then throw away. I've always been that way. If I can fix it, it will get fixed,” explains George.
But it's the bridge near their horse pasture that makes some people do a double take.
“He said we could find an old railroad flatcar. I think that would be interesting. That sounds good.”
So, that's what they did. After taking the wheels off and adding a few finishing touches, this old rail car was reborn as a bridge.
“The acid test was Tommy taking his 30,000 pound backhoe across it and it never moved a bit.”
And being green was another added bonus.
“I guess the idea of it not going to waste...you know not rotting. It was finally getting used for something.”
We would love to hear your go green success story. If you have one or a green idea, just email us gogreen@wspa.com.
