Eliminating waste from the landfill is important to many local companies, especially one of the largest hospital systems in the Upstate.
With over 600,000 pounds of cardboard recycled every year, this cavernous warehouse shows the magnitude of what Greenville Hospital System does to go green and save green.
“We incorporate green and being environmentally conscious in everything that we do.”
It's a motto for GHS’ “green” initiative.
“We believe it's important for us to be environmentally friendly.”
From using plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes to reusing old computers and phones, Greenville Hospital System is on the path to green living.
“We think it's imperative that we recycle as much product that we possibly can and we have a very active program to virtually do that.”
John Mateka is in charge of making sure the vast quantities of products used by the different hospitals in GHS’ system stay out of the landfill.
“If we were to make a container that would fit all the product that we recycle in, we could fit two Statue of Liberty's in that container,” says Mateka.
That's a lot of material...2,700 cubic feet of computers and accessories...nearly 700,000 pounds of cardboard...and literally tons of plastic.
“We've got a lot of plastic liner, a lot of plastic wrap, a lot of plastic products and we're taking that product and recycling that,” Mateka says.
When it comes to recycling, GHS continues to think outside the box.
“We still believe recycling is the thing to do so we'll recycle it in whatever manner we can.”
Greenville Hospital System also recycles more than 2 million pounds of paper along with over 700,000 pounds of wooden pallets. That's equivalent to saving more than 350 trees.
