Campaign 2008 Voice Of The Viewer: Interview With Fred Thompson

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Some call him the only true conservative in the field of presidential candidates.  Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson campaigned in the Upstate this week and gave me an exclusive interview.  He tells me with the news from Iraq improving the war may not be the issue of the race.  Instead it's looking more and more to be the economy.

"So it wouldn't be a shock to anybody if we have a little lessening of growth.  I don't think a whole lot of people expect us to go into a recession or anything like that.  Any kind of a blip in the economy, one way or the other, is cause for concern, especially in an election year."

“However many minutes you and I have been talking here, the national debt has grown about a million dollars each of those minutes.  I believe the last estimate here is about 9 trillion dollars.  What are you going to do to put the brakes on that?"

"Reform our entitlement programs. Cut wasteful spending.  Cut the 'bridges to nowhere.'  Veto bills that contain that junk."

The rising cost of health care has left 1 in 7 Americans without medical insurance.  Fred Thompson’s solution isn't national health care, but bringing down the cost through individual choice.

"And we've got to give people a tax situation where they're not tied to their employment, where they can buy their own insurance, where they can fit their own needs."

“I'm interested in hearing what you think of the speech that Mitt Romney is going to give on Thursday about his faith.  Do you feel the need for all of you who are in this race to talk about your faith and lay it on the line, what you believe, what you don't believe?"

"So I'll wait and see what he has to say and let him speak for himself.  That a very personal issue, but it's also an issue people are very interested in."

Thompson tells me he expects to win the South Carolina primary next month.  The latest poll gives him 18% support right behind Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney's 19%.
