Just days before their holiday break, students at Presbyterian College are getting some scary news. A female student at the school says she was sexually assaulted by a male classmate during a fraternity party this past weekend. A friend of the victim spoke only to News Channel 7 on the condition we would not reveal her name. "I cannot imagine the fear she must have felt," she says. She says her friend was at a fraternity house late Friday night, when a male student took her behind a nearby maintenance building and raped her. The victim escaped and her friends convinced her to call police. "When I heard what happened to my friend, I felt personally violated, because it could happen to any girl here."
It's one reason this friend is coming forward. The other reason: because of who the accused attacker is. News Channel 7 has confirmed through incident reports that the suspect is a student athlete. That's enough reason, this friend says, for the college to stay quiet. "Something needs to be done about this situation."
Meanwhile, students on campus say they were not informed about the alleged assault until Wednesday, several days after it supposedly occured. The college's assistant director of media relations, Hal Milam, did release a statement saying: "This is a very serious accusation. It is being fully investigated by campus police who are working with the solicitor's office to determine if charges should be filed. The investigation is ongoing."
For now, this friend feels like the fear continues to grow. She's just trying to help her friend move on, and make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. "She's continued to be strong."
